Sneak Peek: Burger Guys opens on Thursday

Today I ventured out Westheimer west of Kirkwood to the soon-to-be opened Burger Guys. "The Guys" are veteran chefs Steve Marques and Jake Mazzu, who will welcome the public on Thursday, Sept. 9.

I sampled several items off the menu, which could change in the days before the official opening.

    Burgers
The hand-formed burgers are made with Texas Akaushi beef, which is tasty and lean. I tried two of them:

    • Sydney: roasted beets, fried egg, grilled pineapple and redneck cheddar on a sesame seed Kaiser roll.
    • Saigon: butter, pate, pickled carrot, daikon radish, jalapeño and cilantro on a sesame seed Kaiser roll.

    Hot Dog

Chicago: deep fried American Kobe beef, hot pickles, green relish, Lawnmower ale mustard and celery salt.
Onion strips.: Joanne Witt photoOnion strips.: Joanne Witt photo
    Sides

    • Belgian Fries: shoestring potatoes fried in duck fat with homemade ketchup, a house Béarnaise sauce and Sriracha mayonnaise sauce on the side
    • Onion Strips: marinated in Tabasco and buttermilk with a Tabasco aioli dipping sauce

The Burger Guys' fountain drinks are made with Imperial sugar.

Comments: The Burger guys are serving up flavorful and whimsical adult burgers and hot dogs. The fries were outstanding while the onion rings with the Tabasco onion strips had more flavor than I prefer.

Bonuses: You can add a chicken or duck egg (depending on availability) to any burger. The restaurant is using cheese from my favorite cheese proprietors, Houston Dairymaids as well as eggs from Hatterman Poultry Farm. The Guys are passionate about their food and enthusiastic about their creations.

They also are churning up their own wacky flavored ice creams, in addition to the basic French Vanilla and Chocolate versions (I seriously doubt those are that basic.)

Based on my preview visit, this spot will be worth a visit for burgers and dogs of a different ilk.

Hey that looks good to me!
    I like mayo
    you dont so what!

My favorite burgers for the evening preview were the Sydney and their take on a Banh Mi. I actually loved the onion strips. They were a little greasy, but I couldn't seem to stop eating them. Everyone tonight agreed they were addictive.

Did you taste any of the hot dogs? As for the sides, hands down I would choose the fries, those duck fat fries were crispy on the outside, warm and moist on the inside and not greasy at al. They are the type of fries I dream about. lol

I previewed them last week. The Paris burger was my fave. I'll enjoy coming here.

Great write up and better photos. Food looks great

Do they have veggie burgers for those afraid to eat meat?

    Eric Wed, 09/08/2010 - 1:43pm

There is a veggie burger. I didn't get a chance to taste it last night, but those who did said it was good. I think they said it's built around eggplant.

    Bill Thu, 09/09/2010 - 6:11pm

You better believe it. The bun is made from wheatgrass and the mayo is made from soy. The pickles are made from bean curd that has been soaked in organic carrots. The "lettuce" is actually wheat grass that has been mulched and pressed using an organic press. The burger is served on recycled paper plates. DELICIOUS.

You couldn't think of anything else to say?

    Anonymous Thu, 09/09/2010 - 8:42am

Was at High Hill on labor day, they had real burgers. Are these freaks with buns designated gourmet burgers or just plain bizzare.

    lefthungry Thu, 09/09/2010 - 10:33am

YUM, i cant wait to try it out.

    Anonymous Thu, 09/09/2010 - 2:14pm

Eggplant veggie burger was lovely - light and not a black bean or mushroom in site! Beautifully seasoned too.

    Anonymous Thu, 09/09/2010 - 6:19pm

    I like the dog burger

    boy4riend Thu, 09/09/2010 - 6:33pm

Saigon burger??? Talk about a hot DOG!!!

    Nate Thu, 09/09/2010 - 6:33pm

Had duck fat fries at Hot Doug's in Chi-Town a few days ago. I am excited to eat them at Burger Guys! Great article. I love that they are using local ingredients.

    Joe Thu, 09/09/2010 - 7:56pm

There's a place in Kingwood that has the best Chicago Vienna Dogs you've ever had...called ZZ's on Hamblen Road in Forest Cove. The owner is from Chicago and his pizza is awesome too. Anyone from Chicago who has been there will back this up...best there is.

    Anonymous Thu, 09/09/2010 - 8:08pm

Just what we need. Another "gourmet" burger place with an overpriced menu. Is The Donald stopping by for some Belgian fries cooked in duck fat? This will rapidly follow the slider craze of 2008.

    Anonymous Mon, 09/27/2010 - 9:52am

How is $3 for 1 1/2 lbs of French Fries.. overpriced???

    Anonymous Wed, 10/13/2010 - 11:17am

awesome, you're one less person i'll have to wait in line behind. I work near the place, have been twice since its open, and if i have to pay 10-12 bucks to eat at something gross like fuddruckers, i'd much rather spend 12-14 and go here, have a fantastic burger, fries and soda.

Anyone thinking about going, HIGHLY recommend.

    Thomas Kim Thu, 09/09/2010 - 8:40pm

if anyone else is wondering what the menu is:

i love 5 guys burger & fries, but that is not the menu for BURGER GUYS

    Anonymous Fri, 09/10/2010 - 7:28am

    Wrong restaurant, dude!

    Big Stevieonymous Fri, 09/10/2010 - 12:27am

Now, that is some nasty-looking stuff. I wouldn't feed that crap to my crap-eating dog!

    treysco Sat, 12/04/2010 - 1:28pm

Place is alright. Went there last night and our party ordered up 5 burgers. I had the Syndey, wife had the one with avacado on it. Both burgers were good, not great. I had a small bundle of unchewable stuff at the end of my burger left in my mouth, which of course I disposed of discreetly in my napkin. Fries were generally enjoyed by all. String onions were tasty, but really nothing more than a pile of small crumbs. Not sure how you're supposed to eat them. The string onions were sized like shredded cheese, so you kind of grab a pinch and hope they don't fall out before they get to your mouth. The dipping sauces were entirely unusable because of the tiny shredded size of the onions.

The fountain drinks were enjoyed by all. I had a banana foster shake. Not good. Tasted like vanilla softserve with some kind of banana syrup in it? My wife tried it, no go too. I make malts at my home using fresh premium ingredients, so my expectations may have been too high. I was thinking maybe some real banana in it? Nope. Skip the shakes for sure.

As others mentioned, ventilation is poor. You WILL smell like a smokey burger joint if you dine inside - so much smoke and smell in the air, it pervades your clothing heavily in short order. Probably not good if you go back to work and you're officed in a cube type environment - your co-workers will not be pleased.

Gal taking orders was the highlight - cute and friendly and interacted well with my kids. Her name was Cassidy (sp?). Anyway, whoever hired and trained her should be commended!

Probably won't go here again. This is certainly not worth any kind of a drive over to try - it simply isn't that good. Novel concept, not inexpensive though - my bill was $66, again, 5 burgers, couple of fries/onions, fountain drinks. Hope this helps.

    YumYum! Wed, 12/22/2010 - 4:46pm

$66.00... You could have gone to Whataburger! I ate there not too long ago and I thought the burger I had was filling. It had some pink in it (something I didn't care for) but I ate it anyway. I love french fries, so I thought they were good. I will say that I'm not sure that is a good location for them. I hope they do well though because they are passionate about their food.

    gidget Sun, 06/26/2011 - 8:19am

Though their burgers are delicious,I would never recommend planning an event with them. They are disorganized and it's difficult to communicate with them. They have a "fly by the seat of your pants" attitude that caused me great stress during the planning of my event.
