Three Brothers Bakery is opening a new shop today in the neighborhood near Memorial City Mall.

The Braeswood neighborhood bakery, known for cakes, pastries, bagels, rye bread and rolls (it is perhaps the city’s most popular purveyor of challah for Rosh Hashanah), is opening a new bakery on the west side of town. And a new concept for the Jucker family of bakers: a café with table service in addition to the bakery. The café concept, which includes free WiFi within a coffeehouse setting, is hoped to be the first of several expansions, according to Three Brothers.

The bakery has been on a roll lately (pardon the pun). Last year, fifth-generation baker Bobby Jucker was named pastry chef of the year at the 2011 Houston Culinary Awards presented by My Table magazine; Three Brothers also was named favorite bakery. Jucker and his amazing cake creations also has been featured on Food Network programs.

    The new Memorial store at 12393 Kingsride Lane (713-464-2253) will be open Monday through Thursday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Challah isn't just for Rosh Hashanah. It's great for the weekly Sabbath, too. With Purim fast approaching, I'll have to stop by for some hamentashcen. That's good eating.

Day-old challah makes great French toast, too! Mazel tov.

Let's face it folks, Houston has lots of great restaurants but not have many great bakeries. Three Brothers certainly isn't a great bakery ... think "Kroger's" and you've got the taste. Years ago they were pretty good, but something happened to them about 5 years ago and they never recovered. Did they sell out to new owners?

Three Brothers is still owned by the same family. At least of the founders is still alive and kicking. What's happened to the place in the last five years? It was closed by a hurricane for more than a year. During the rebuilding most of us got to ruminate on the real difference between Three Brothers Bakery and grocery bakeries. Man, now I'm craving a bag of bagels.

Thank you to 29-95 and Greg Morago for the wonderful article and to all who have been so encouraging and giving such a warm welcome to Three Brothers Bakery's new Memorial Location. We look forward to welcoming everyone and getting to know everyone. If you have not been to Three Brothers Bakery since Hurricane Ike, I think you'll find a new bakery that is almost 63 years old. We look forward to welcoming everyone at our new location or on Braeswood.

Janice--the Jucker's run a great bakery, I'll never forget the many Sunday morning brunches with my Bubby (and, when I was very young, my Great Bubby), delighting in your one of the kind onion pockets, or the countless Shabbat dinners that began with slicing a loaf of your challah. Three Brother's is a Houston institution, and I'm excited by the new Memorial location. If they can melt a slice of muenster cheese over an open faced onion pocket and pour a cup of coffee, I'll be right as rain.

Keep doing what you've been doing!

I remember Three Brothers when they were on Almeda and Ashcraft Bakery down the street. They were both great places to stop in after school when I was a kid. I look forward to trying this new location near Memorial City.

I forgot that I bought my wedding cake at the Braeswood location back when I go to be an older kid.

I remember roller skating on Sundays in the 1980s down the hike/bike path along the bayou from the Medical Center to the original Three Brothers. I used to love the almond paste-filled pastry they sold. Unfortunately, they made it a special-order item and I quit going there.

They had the best cream puffs in town.
