Whine & Dine: Praise for Bubba's, Damian's and Luke's

My mailbox was full of reader raves this week.

Keith B. Payne: Palm Restaurant, 6100 Westheimer, 713-977-2544.

“So, my Dillard’s card is issued by American Express who sends me a $50 Palm Restaurant card glued to a letter thanking me for my patronage. I read the letter real close for details but only found an Aug. 31st deadline. When I arrived on my own at the restaurant, my waitress pulled the card off the letter and noticed in very small print on the card one entree must be paid for. The manager said he would accept the card as is for me.
“I thoroughly enjoyed my pan seared Chilean sea bass with roasted corn and a bowl of incredibly tasty lobster bisque. Many thanks to the manager for not embarrassing me for my oversight. I will definitely return his kindness with my future visits to this charming dining establishment.”

Elizabeth & Keith Guilbeau: Bubba’s Shrimp Palace, 113 6th in San Leon, 281-339-1515.

“Several weeks ago, we went to Bubba’s Shrimp Palace to celebrate our daughter-in-law’s birthday. This is a great place for family and friends, and with it being right down on the water, they have a sandy beachfront so kids can play while waiting for their meals. We all enjoyed the wonderful fresh seafood, sides and the ample portions. This restaurant is a huge pink building with an inviting staff, great service, and everything was extremely clean. We can’t wait to go back. They had the most delicious shrimp we have ever eaten! The prices are really reasonable and we strongly recommend everyone experience Bubba’s.”

    Barbara Jean Lauratis: Damian's, 3011 Smith, 713-522-0439.

“We chose Damian’s the other evening as we had not been there in a long time. What a delight and a pleasure to dine there. Quiet (which is almost impossible to find in Houston anymore, unfortunately), lovely décor, fabulous food and great service (Frederick was our waiter, and the other wait staff was terrific, taking away empty plates, etc). We highly recommend Damian’s for a wonderful dining experience.”

    Karen Hallett: Luke’s Icehouse, 903 Durham, 281-888-7028.

“Seven of us went to the new Luke’s Icehouse for a girls’ night out. We sat outside on the patio to enjoy the great weather. The waitress was attentive. Despite the place only being open a short time, she had a working knowledge of the beers on draft and made good suggestions regarding the appetizers.
“Upon receiving our entrees, there was a mix-up on two of the orders. The manager, Drew Cox, apologized and offered complimentary replacements. This was over and above what he needed to do to rectify the situation, but indicated how willing they are to please, grow their business and attract repeat customers. We’re definitely going to return and would recommend the patio as a pleasant, casual get-together place. Bonus — when we got the proper food — it was great.”

three positive reviews? no whines? what is this column coming to?

    Hello-Clarice Thu, 09/06/2012 - 5:53pm

Count your blessings it wasn't 5 pages of indignant bitching by the fashion police.

    john deaux Wed, 09/05/2012 - 10:53am

What no whining? This means next week will have to be ALL whines!

    THELAFFR Wed, 09/05/2012 - 11:14am

I only see FOUR shrimp on that plate. Tell me you'd already eaten 6 by the time you took picture?!?! They sure look good though!

    Syd Kearney Wed, 09/05/2012 - 11:28am

If I recall, the original photo showed an entire plate of shrimp, but the foreground (all shrimp) was out of focus. Sometimes my extreme crops aren't intentional but are to mask a poor quality photo.

As I recall, on the day I was there, the restaurant was offering an all-you-can eat fried shrimp dinner for about $16. If you're interested, then I'd call ahead and inquire. San Leon is a long drive for some folks.

    THELAFFR Wed, 09/05/2012 - 1:27pm

    Okey dokey.

    dragnwagn Wed, 09/05/2012 - 12:07pm

Bubba's IS the bomb! Their hushpuppies are so light and crispy and so is the shrimp. We go there every time we get down to the San Leon area. Great place to meet up with friends for a Sunday afternoon....

    Pete O Wed, 09/05/2012 - 12:34pm

Everything is fried. I would hope a seafood place located within casting distance of the bay would offer other fish besides fried catfish.

Good place to have a few drinks and appetizers, but if you want anything other than fried food, pass the entree.

    TheRealRick Thu, 09/06/2012 - 7:58am

Chill Pete - fried is my favorite food group.

    just me too Wed, 09/05/2012 - 1:15pm

I'm glad to hear Luke's is good place - I want to check it out.

I've always LOVED Damians. Haven't been in a while. I need to fix that!

And it's great to hear that customer satisfaction is king at The Palm. Another great place I haven't been in a while....

    Legran Wed, 09/05/2012 - 1:44pm

Am a Damian's regular and it is consistently good food and the service is outstanding. Best house salad on earth and for some reason I must not tire of the Veal Picatta as I always order it with a side of sauteed spinach as my entre. Kudos to owner Bubba Butera.

    SRHookEm Wed, 09/05/2012 - 1:47pm

Really? Bubbas? What has happened to the state of Gulf Coast seafood? C'mon readers, aim a little higher.

    Blech.

    SRHookEm Wed, 09/05/2012 - 1:48pm

Oops, I thought the review was for Bubba Gumps. Nevermind.

    Anonymous Bubba Wed, 09/05/2012 - 2:29pm

Those HushPuppies look over-cooked. Were they really that color? A light brown or golden brown is the proper color for those delicious delicacies!

    Dennisi H. Wed, 09/05/2012 - 2:35pm

We dined at The Palm this past Saturday. My wife had lobster and I had the NY strip. This restaurant never disappoints with its consistency in quality and superb service. We're always happy when we leave. Try the "Bag of Donuts" for dessert.

    Oldpeople suck Wed, 09/05/2012 - 10:12pm

You must've old if you like the Palm - not one person under 30 goes there. Only time I went was to use the same AMEX gift card - food sucked and the interior was even worse.

Give me your best... Internet trolls - I'm white , rich and hate everything you think is cool.

    Bring it.

    john deaux Thu, 09/06/2012 - 9:35am

you are also a lot of things the Chrony will not allow in print!

    GMGMGM Thu, 09/06/2012 - 6:35pm

Yeah? Well everything I think is cool hates you! Just kidding but why did you feel the need to make that announcement at the end? Your opinion is just as valid as anyone's so you really didn't need to issue the challenge.

    Mister Bill Thu, 09/06/2012 - 11:25pm

What a dip!! You have about as much class as room full of sewer rats.

    OldPeople Still Suck Fri, 09/07/2012 - 6:24pm

Thank you to the trolls who wrote back. Please elaborate on what I am that the "chrony" won't print? You sound tough! Calling the newspaper the Chrony. And to the person who called me a dip - brrrrrrr! That was cold hearted.

Honestly, I expected more. I look forward to when OBAMA is going to be RE-ELECTED and hopefully it will keep all of you from flapping yer yaps at me.

    4 MORE YEARS!!!

NO MORE YEARS for the Palm!

Here's to HOPE AND CHANGE that the Palm goes out of business.

    Dennisi H. Fri, 09/07/2012 - 7:05pm

When I was your age I knew everything. Now, I don't know anything. Yep, I'm older than 30. Yes, you fit into the "Asshole" column.

    intrepid Thu, 09/06/2012 - 12:06am

Great W&D this week. Some good reminders that the old standbys are still doing it right.

    Whiteoak Thu, 09/06/2012 - 5:46am

Haven't tried the "all you can eat" shrimp at Bubba's but have had the hush puppies and they are delicious! Pleasant way to start the morning....all good news on the restaurant front.

    IRISH MIKE Thu, 09/06/2012 - 9:27am

    Syd,

I really enjoy reading all of the Whine N Dine articles, I just don't know how to access previous articles/archives?

    Ava Thu, 09/06/2012 - 11:20am

I hosted a business dinner at Damian's recently after a long absence. The food was delicious, and the service excellent. My colleagues loved it. I won't stay away so long this time.

    ShannonTX Thu, 09/06/2012 - 1:25pm

Love Bubba's we were in San Leon for a weekday afternoon of fun and touring the Railean Rum operation there last year. Popped in Bubba's for lunch and were pleased with everything we got. Great service too.

    GMGMGM Thu, 09/06/2012 - 6:37pm

Just the fact that the management of The Palm is so accommodating and considerate makes me want to go.

    helloall Fri, 09/07/2012 - 1:36pm

My wife and I tried to go there and get the lobster special for 2 for $99. We were told due to the fine print we could not combine our Amex card with any other special offers and the manager came to our table to tell us that this year (they have run the promotion in prior years) they were adamantly not making any exceptions. That's fine until this article comes out and makes you feel second class.

    wrobel Thu, 09/06/2012 - 7:40pm

If you find yourself in San Leon bypass Bubba's fried food and go to Top Water Grill.

100% better and you don't have to settle for fried. Then again Top Water's fried shrimp maybe the best I've ever had.

    wrobel Thu, 09/06/2012 - 7:43pm

If I read Keith B. Payne post properly
He did not read the terms and once he was told the terms he pleaded ignorant and god a free meal from The Palms.

I hope he at least tipped

    Mister Bill Thu, 09/06/2012 - 11:28pm

If you're in San Leon and go anywhere besides Gilhoolys you wasting your time and money.
