One of the reasons to follow Whine & Dine is to discover new-to-you restaurants. This week’s raves are places that were previously off my radar.
Carolyn Maas: Daddy O’s Pizza, 2645 Gessner, 713-939-8000
“I want to let everyone know about Daddy O’s Pizza. I never was a big pizza eater, but with grandchildren, I started ordering from Daddy O’s. What fantastic pizzas. Chain places advertise on TV and the pizzas look great, but there are not a lot of items on the actual pizza when it is delivered. Daddy O’s has a lot of toppings on the pizza. No matter what you order, it is great. A little more money than other pizza places, but it is so worth it.”
Lupe Fecco: Golden China, 25024 Interstate 45 in Spring, 281-363-2412
“My husband and I make it a point to eat out every time he gets his check. We returned to Golden China in Spring, a family-owned restaurant we have visited on numerous occasions. The chef, Raymond, always performs over and above our expectations, and Helen, our waitress, is always very pleasant and accommodating. On ordering “Chicken with Garlic Sauce,” my husband’s request was make it ‘hot, hot, hot.’ When he received his plate of delicate tender chicken and crunchy fresh vegetables, all I can say is he never stopped eating and complimenting on every bite (although his eyes did show the ‘heat’ factor). Of course, he said he would do it again. My shrimp in Hunan sauce was steaming when it came to the table. The shrimp and vegetables (had) a delicate balance of savory heat and sweet sauce, and it came with more than an ample serving of fried rice and egg roll. The lunch specials start at under $6 and include egg roll or soup. Tomorrow is Friday and another payday for my honey, so you guessed it … back to Golden China for another try at one of their fabulous yummy dishes. P.S. Did I mention no MSG?”
Rita Brady: Signature Bistro, 1918 NASA Parkway in Seabrook, 281-474-4455
“For all of us who live in the Clear Lake area, we know the selection of fine-dining restaurants is scarce. My husband and I were invited to a wine tasting at Signature Bistro several months ago, which was wonderful. Since then, we have dined there several times, and the food is always excellent. They have great starters, such as the Mediterranean Stuffed Portobello appetizer and Spinach and Strawberry Salad (both enough for two). We’ve tried several of their entrées, and our favorites are the Tortilla Crusted Snapper and the Portobello Chicken Melt. We often go on Friday night when there is live entertainment. Signature Bistro is owned by two sisters, Melissa and Elizabeth, and they’re always gracious. The service is great, and the prices are extremely reasonable.”
