First you should know, Thelma doesn't suffer fools (or the indecisive) gladly. Stories are legion about her impatience and you generally hear two or three tales while you're standing in line for Thelma's smoky ribs. Thelma's sauce is sweet; her tea even sweeter. And while Thelma's barbecue brisket has been spotlighted by PBS, the Food Network and the Travel Network, many of her legions of fans come strictly for her crisply fried, flavorful fish and fries. Update: A fire in February 2009 destroyed Thelma's original spot. It was reopened on Southmore in April of 2009.
Vibe: From friendly to fearful, depending on Thelma's mood.
Mrs Thelma was a church supporting, hard praying woman of God.
If she went out of business it was a act of God. We must be thankful for the great food we had, when she was open. May God bless you.
Um, yeah , good luck with the whole "God is a food critic" stance....
I have been going to Thelmas for years and I just recently visited her location no more than a month ago but just a couple of weeks ago I noticed a BBQ truck outside of her location and thought that maybe she had a fire of some sort again and was simply improvising but low and behold she is no longer there. The gentleman was not at all helpful saying he didn't know anything or have any information as to if and where she moved to. So if anyone has an update please inform and update the status.
Thanks
A coworker of mine was bragging and raving about how good Thelma's food. She took me to this location for lunch, but we soon found out that she is no longer there. Can anyone tell me where is Thelma's new location? People were in line, pulling up and she wasn't there; I gotta try it!!
Just left Thelma's
Great catfish dinner - dirty rice awesome
a pound of brisket to go
nice ring and good flavor
Sweet woman who obviously takes a lot of pride in her business and her time.
As a veteran i HAVE ZERO PROBLEMS going to a place that has rules.
I've heard about Thelma's for a long time and just got over there yesterday. The prices are quite low and the meat had good flavor once you get passed the sauce. I'm sorry but it tasted no different than Kraft bottled BBQ sauce. The portions are large, true, but it's like eating in a grimey garage. Go a little farther and stop by Frenchy's for chicken.
Because Frenchy's has good BBQ....Troll.
I think she has the best catfish in SE Texas. I like the BarBeQue, but I go there for the catfish. Thelma has always been nice to me. But then, I have always been respectful of her and her rules. Miss Thelma is just trying to require people to act the way they should already know how to act.If they don't like it, she doesn't want or need them in her place. I can't help but agree.
This place serves up some of the best BBQ
in the city. Too bad it also serves up some
of the worst customer service/abuse as well.
You have to have thick skin to be a regular
there. I love her food, but only eat there
when I am in the frame of mind to suffer her.
At times she seems like a really nice lady,
but then she Jeckyl and Hyde's on a dime and
Katy bar the door...If possible send somebody
there who nothing ever bother's them and get
it go.
Love Thelma's, good barbecue is not that easy to locate in this town.
Thelma's barbecue is the BEST hands down. Prices are great (X-large portions)She is a lady that takes no stuff from RUDE people. I go there as often as possible. Love you Ms. Thelma keep making Houston proud.
Thelma was the first in town to post the notice that she wouldn't take an order if you were on a cell phone. It's about time that someone stood up for being treated as a human being rather than a piece of furniture.
You can alway order at Jack in the Box on your phone from your car.
Go in with the right attitude...meaning manners and politeness...and you'll do fine. In Houston on business, looked her up. Took my staff and told Thelma I'd flown across the country to find her. She was wonderful. Wouldn't let me mix a plate...wanted brisket and catfish...but when I got the order, she came out with a order of catfish and a big smile. Told her I was flying my wife down a week later and when we got there she welcomed here like a member of the family.
The 'q is the best you will find. It's her style. Her attitude is dependent on how you act. Don't act like you know more about how to run a restaurant and you'll do fine. And if you do think you know more...go open your own joint.
with so many complaints about the owner and service there is a big chance they treat the food same way be careful !
I will never go back to Thelma's again. I am not a big eater and wanted to split a plate with my hubby. She very rudely refused. On another occasion, something was in the rice that was not supposed to be there, (if you know what I mean). I exchanged the order and they acted as if I had done something wrong. Never again.
I come for the food and not the service.
Best barbecue in town, take the sass or go to an inferior place for your 'cue.
The food was delicious but the attitude of the owner made me not want to return. There are too many barbeque restaurants to buy from who provide better customer service than this one. Pretty soon everyone who buys from this restaurant will take their business somewhere else because of the bad customer service.
Oh how I love Thelma! Her BBQ is really good, her sauce is just too sweet for me....If you mind your manners, you won't have any problems with Thelma...otherwise she instantly becomes the BBQ Devil from Hell! ... But if you are real nice to Thelma, she is super nice to you! sort of like it should be!
sounds like a seinfeld ep.
Luv it!!!! I wished i lived closer in town. Thelmas BBQ is the best in town for locals.
Don't need service like this. No thanks, Thelma.
This is so true how her customer service is just terrible.
I live in the neighborhood and has been passing by and frequently and notice her business has drop. Everybody don't have to put up with her attitude. My mother is older than she is and when she hollow at my mother I know its was time take my business elsewhere.
There is a lot BBQ company don't like to give you loose cut meat and she s one of them.
this is the best bbq in houston, tx. the reason why people complain about customer service is because many of us tend to be on the phone or wait 15 min to decide while these people are taking the order. if you go to new york, new jersey or chicago ... you'll find the same service ... fast, blunt, and real. that's how thelma's roll! love this place!
Thelma really had some good barbecue, but her customer service is deplorable. I use to frequent her establishment often, and each time I was either exposed to her verbally abusing another customer, or I was getting ruffed up. I decided that I would not continue to patronize a business that treat it's customers like trash. Can't wait to check out Pierson's.
Never been there. I can tell by the photo. This one's authentic and I highly recommend.
