    Friday, September 4:

    • KUHF's Silent Film Concert Series presents The General from 1926 with a soundtrack performed by Golden Arm Trio. 8 p.m. Discovery Green. Free.

    • Afterward, head over to River Oaks Theater for the final 29-95-sponsored midnight movie, Return to Oz. Midnight Friday and Saturday. $9.50; $6.50 for students.

    • Former Last Comic Standing host, one-time SNL cast member, and minor movie star Jay Mohr does stand-up at the Improv  8 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. $30.

    • Artist/musician Thor Harris reads from Ocean of Despair, an illustrated comic describing his descent into depression. 8 p.m. Domy. Free.

    • You saw Mic Skills' video for Criminal last week on 29-95, now see him live at his monthly hip-hop showcase, Mission Control. 10 p.m. The Mink. $5.

    Saturday, September 5:

    • Soulfest '09 will be huge fun with performances by Houston soul legends Roy Head, Archie Bell and Barbara Lynn. 8 p.m. The Continental Club.

    • Saturday afternoon is not a bad time to take a trip to the museum district. Here's what you'll find this weekend:

At the Menil you'll find a couple of small but cool exhibitions: Drawings on Site: Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen (look for the drawing of the sphynx with a shuttlecock for a head; it made me laugh) and Body in Fragments (see a bit of that here). At CAMH, No Zoning is still going strong through October; also find Jason Villegas' work in the Perspectives gallery downstairs (plus way-early Christmas shopping in the gift shop). At Lawndale, the 30th anniversary exhibition is a lightweight diversion (Elaine Bradford, 29-95 loves you more than you could ever know. Also, look for Seth Alverson's Tits in the Window. Because it's there.) and if you make it all the way up to the third floor, you'll find The Green Cyber Web, which is like Halloween in a room, or like schizophrenia (Go up there. Trust us on this.) Next door at Contemporary Craft, dysfunction/Unknitting is still up through Sept. 13, and it's worth the stop in. These venues are all free, pretty close to each other and will make for a nice afternoon.

    • It's Vinyl Record Store Day at Cactus Music, meaning special releases by Pearl Jam, The Mars Volta, RX Bandits and more, and a performance by Robert Ellis at 4 p.m. Free.

    • Are you into college football? Celebrate the start of the season at the new sports bar at the Meridian. I'm sure there will be food and drinks to keep even the non-football fans happy. Festivities start at 10 a.m. and go on until 1 in the morning.

    • The Houston Brazilian Festival probably isn't like taking a trip to Rio, but it should be a good enough look at Brazilian dance, music and art. 4 p.m. Jones Plaza. $10.

    • Former Million Year Dance (listen here) singer Jonathan Welch now goes by the name Tyagaraja and is playing a full-band show for the first time in two years. Craig Kinsey (listen here) is also on the bill. 9 p.m. Avant Garden. $5.

    • Way out in the opposite direction, musically speaking, is the Jonx (listen here), which is sharing a bill with Novox and Bald Eagle Burger. 10 p.m. Rudyard's.

    Sunday, September 6:

    • The Museum of Fine Arts is free today, thanks to Target. 1-5 p.m.

    • Dance around like a movie star at Bollywood Blast at Miller Outdoor Theater. Read more here. 8 p.m. Free.

    Monday, September 7:

Dandy Warhols plays Warehouse Live. $20.
