I think SOMOSUNO (they encourage it capitalizado) are the first band I filmed that I’d never actually seen live before. I knew that ringleader Fernando Alejandro plays drums in Cop Warmth, one of the most anarchic, clusterfucked-up bands I’ve ever seen, and that was enough for me. I invited the guys over, decided to tempt fate and mess around with my webcam and the little camera thing my sister got me for Christmas (thanks, Kate!), and braced myself for whatever came through my door.
And now I have a new favorite band. In three and a half minutes they combined twice as many musical styles into one of the freshest sounding things I’ve heard in a long time. The vocals in this clip were a bit drowned out by the bass and percussion, meaning some of Fernando’s crazy elastic bilingual flow is unfortunately obscured. I highly recommend checking them out live – they play out more frequently than any band I can think of that doesn’t have a residency somewhere, and though they might not always have those hats (I was VERY impressed that they brought their own hats) they tend to cut loose a little more when they’re not in somebody’s living room.
Next show: Feb. 13 at Cellar Bar.
