Marmaduke is bigger (and apparently faster) than an ugly purple automobile. This might be elderly Marmaduke creator Brad Anderson's joke at the expense of the relatively new phenomenon of compact cars, but is probably the same "look at how big this really big dog is" joke he has been telling since the McKinley administration.
