I don’t know what the point of being famous would be if you didn’t go on television completely shitfaced at least once or twice. Some people, however, seem to make a career out of it. Here are a few notable drunken celebrity interview clips. I did my best to weed out the people who, slurring and incoherent as they may have been, were more likely high (sorry, Norm MacDonald), tripping (sorry, Val Kilmer) or fucked up on pills (sorry, James Brown, Paula Abdul, John Stamos, about a hundred others).
This first one’s easy: legendary Irish band The Pogues, featuring walking dentist joke Shane MacGowan, on what appears to be a German television show. The Pogues were notorious alcoholics back in their late-80s heyday and also apparently released albums. God I wish I could find more of this “interview” but this much’ll have to do.
There are tons of clips on YouTube featuring fantastic British character actor Oliver Reed wasted on a variety of BBC talk shows. This one’s got a couple particularly nice moments.
Here’s a recent entry into my hall of fame from this year’s Golden Globes. Tracy Morgan is just funny. He just is.
And last, but definitely not least, nobody can top singer/songwriter/unshaven lush Serge Gainsbourg propositioning Whitney Houston on live television. In addition to being a brilliant musical icon, it turns out Gainsbourg also is fluent in French in two languages.
Remember, kids: if you’re going to go on national television, people are going to say things about it on the internet. So make sure to do it right.
"Deal with it, Cate Blanchett!" Heh, I love Tracy.
These are all excellent choices, and I'm particularly a fan of the way Serge keeps stroking Whitney's earlobe. But I'm disappointed there's no Danny Devito post-limoncello on The View.
