Let's start with the actor and actress nominations: you are going to be shocked by this, but I am disappointed that Elizabeth Mitchell was overlooked for her amazing work on Lost this season. She really became the heart of that show this season, and I believe she deserved at least a nod in the Best Supporting Actress in a Drama category. Similarly, I am not sure if you'd put them in supporting or lead, but whichever, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Chloe Sevigny and Gennifer Goodwin all should have been recognized for their tremendous work on Big Love. However, because the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences feels the need to reward big name, traditionally film actors for deigning to do television, those spots are gobbled up by your Dianne Wiests and Sally Fields. That is a shame.
As far as the Best Actor nods in both drama categories, I'm not going to complain (much). Everyone who was nominated pretty much deserves to be there. That said, I don't know that we needed two nods for Boston Legal -- there has never been a bit of scenery that Shattner hasn't devoured, ever -- but I'm not that upset by this. It would have been nice to have seen Bill Paxton recognized for his Big Love work, and he probably should be in Simon Baker's spot. But as Simon Baker is really hot, I'm not going to make a stink about it.
In terms of the Best Comedy Actor and Actress nominations, they are all great with a couple of exceptions. 1. I question labeling Monk as a comedy. And 2. Two and a Half Men should never, ever, ever, EVER be awarded with anything. Just, ick. That out of the way, HOORAY, JEMAINE! I feel really sorry for Bret, being left out and all, but HOORAY, JEMAINE!
Onto the show nominations. I really can't complain about the Best Drama choices -- I don't watch Damages, and so I'm in no position to judge that choice. I have heard good things, and with a cast that is led by Glenn Close, it's guaranteed to be award bait. I am less impressed by House. Look, it's a perfectly fine show, and Hugh Laurie is a great actor, but if I had my way, this would have been Battlestar Galactica's spot. That said, this list is otherwise perfect: Lost, Mad Men, Big Love and Dexter are certainly the best dramas on television right now, and I'll be thrilled if any one of these goes home with the big prize. Mad Men probably has this sewn up, and that's great.
As far as the Best Comedies go, Family Guy? Are you kidding me with this? That Family Guy? The one with that dog, and the baby and the fat dad? That one? No. A thousand times no. Absolutely not. I am embarrassed for you, Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Embarrassed. Deeply. Deep down in my soul, I hurt for you. There were so many other, better choices out there: The Simpsons, Samantha Who?, Party Down, the 20-second video my 8-year-old made the other day. Why? Why did you have to sink to this level? I'm going to avert my eyes now, and pretend this never happened.
And finally, Best Reality Competition. Again, so close, and yet, Dancing With the Stars instead of So You Think You Can Dance? What was it about Steve-O's performance that made you think that this loud, braying sequined spectacle was worthy of a nomination? The dancing on So You Think You Can Dance, which garnered 4 of the 6 Best Choreography nominations, is so powerful, so moving and SO SUPERIOR IN EVERY WAY TO ANYTHING ON DANCING WITH THE STARS ... I just ... I don't get it. So You Think You Can Dance is to Dancing With the Stars as Top Chef is to some cooking segment on The View when Elizabeth Hasselbeck helps Emeril Lagasse make some gumbo or jambalaya. So You Think You Can Dance is to Dancing With the Stars as American Idol is to that terrible karaoke movie Gwenyth Paltrow was in that one time. And what is making me mad here is that I WATCH DANCING WITH THE STARS. I LIKE DANCING WITH THE STARS. But it DOESN'T DESERVE THIS NOMINATION. NO, IT DOES NOT.
It just can't compare to this:
Or this:
Bad call. Also, terrible call on leaving off Cat Deeley in Outstanding Host For A Reality Or Reality-Competition Program. Boo. Hiss. But really, it doesn't matter, because we all know that The Amazing Race is going to win because Jerry Bruckheimer still has a bunch of years left on his contract with the devil.
WATCH THIS
I liked Duets.
Oh, Therese. I'm so glad to hear we feel the same way about Family Guy. Sometimes I feel so alone.
Couldn't agree more. Guess that makes three of us.
Duets, on the other hand, is awesome.
I've got to say, Family Guy is the only show that consistently makes everyone I know laugh, no matter which country they're from. And the Simpsons hasn't been good in years.
