Quite to the contrary, I was delighted by Mr. Simmons' quirky and idiosyncratic performance of Holmes. It was a breath of fresh air to see a modern interpretation of such a classic character. He brought a much needed lightness to the role as opposed to the expected "gravitas" of so many performances. It is a rarity in theater to find actors willing to depart from the known and make a role truly unique. Though I echo your view of an at-times lacking script, I thought all around it worked, from Simmons' performance, to the modern Gothic twist in costuming and versatile set design. To each his own.
